Pyrenees XC Tour: France and Spain Off Road
View subject link The Essentials | Stage Details | Pricing | Terms & Conditions | Reservations

A cross country tour in the truest sense, crossing the borders of two countries off-road on mountain bikes. Riding through spectacular mountain scenery with trails that take you off the beaten track, explore the Pyrenees from a different perspective.

Over three days you'll ride through the wilder reaches of this central area of the Pyrenees, starting at our base in France, heading southwards through the mountains to explore the Val d'Aran in Spain before returning back to France and Velo Pyrenees.

Despite traversing through the wilderness, the route never strays too far from civilisation, passing occasionally through typical Pyrenean villages and hamlets. This is a self-guided tour using a mix of well established singletracks and paths.

The Essentials: How and when can I do it?

You choose when you would like to participate. We will reserve your accommodation, breakfast and evening meals. When you arrive, you will receive an 'XC tour pack' that includes all the information you need including: details of the itinerary, maps, written directions and practical information such as water stops and cafes en-route. You must carry a lightweight day sack for your lunch, spare clothes and equipment. See our recommended kit list for more information. On request, we will operate a vehicle luggage transfer for groups of 3 or more people. Any luggage or equipment that you do not need during the tour can be safely stored at Velo Pyrenees for your return.

When can I do it: One of the benefits of this tour is that you can choose your own date to participate. However, because the route passes over some high mountainous terrain that is snow covered in the winter, the months from June to October are recommended. The month of September is one of the best times as the weather is very stable and the mountains are beautiful with the colours of autumn. If you have any questions regarding dates and availability, please contact us.

Logistics - food and drink: Breakfasts and evening meals are included with your accommodation. We can supply you with a packed lunch for your first day of riding (recommended). Within walking distance of your overnight stops in Spain, there are bakeries and shops selling groceries, cheese and charcuterie if you would like to take a picnic lunch with you on the second and final day. Each day, you will pass some cafes, providing additional re-fuelling stops if you don't want to carry too much with you. Carry at least two 750ml water bottles. If the weather is hot it is normal to drink more than twice as much. There are mountain villages on each days' route where you can re-fill your bottles. Reliable sources are indicated on the information we give you.

Leaving Bossost where you will return to later, you join several way marked mtb trails to climb to the mountain pass of Varrados surrounded by mountain peaks. Here the landscape is wilder with a mix of colourful rocks rich in iron and sun-bleached grass and, on the descent, clumps of pine cling to the mountainsides. Stage 3: Re-entering France to Velo Pyrenees
Stage 3

The profile of this final stage features two large mountain passes, the first one climbs into France and traverses the frontier mountains revealing majestic panoramic views of the Luchonnaise mountain range. What goes up, must come down - fast flowing singletracks descend on an open mountainside surrounded by granite peaks looming above.

The scenery quickly changes with your altitude, entering pine forests on a trail laced with switch-backs falling into Luchon. Positioned in the middle of the stage, Luchon offers many treats in its cafes and artisan shops before tackling the final mountain. More mountain views are on offer with 360 degree views as you meander the length of the ridge line that leads to a grand descent home, some 1,200m below.

Visiting Luchon, dubbed as the Queen of the Pyrenees (recently signposted as the King), the spa town of Luchon has a history for entertaining royalty and european aristocrats. Enjoy the comforts of its cafe culture while admiring the rich victorian architecture. Riding the ridge line for 7km at 1,800m altitude.
